The largest inhabited riverine island in the world, Majuli is the cultural capital and cradle of Assamese civilisation, established over 500 years ago by the revered Assamese saint Srimanta Shankardeva and his disciple Madhavdeva.

The primary tribe inhabiting Majuli is the Mishing, comprising about 47% of the island’s population. The term “Mishing” is derived from two words: ‘Mi’ meaning ‘People’ and ‘Yassing’ meaning ‘Fine’.

Check-in at a traditionally built bamboo hut.
Later, explore the cultural heritage of the ethnic Mish and Assamese people by visiting their villages.
Overnight stay: Bamboo Hut.

After breakfast, explore the traditional roots of Assamese society by visiting the Vaishnavite Monasteries of Majuli.

Places to Visit:

  • Dakhinpat Satra: Founded by Banamalidev, known for promoting Raas Leela, which has now become a national festival of Assam.
  • Garamurh Satra: Established by Lakshmikantadeva, known for the Raas Leela celebrations held in autumn. It also preserves ancient weapons called Bartop (Cannons).
  • Auniati Satra: Founded by Niranjan Pathakdeva, it is famous for Paalnaam and Apsara dances. It houses an extensive collection of ancient Assamese artefacts, utensils, jewellery, and handicrafts.
  • Kamalabari Satra: Established by Bedulapadma Ata, this centre is dedicated to art, culture, literature, and classical studies. Its branch, the Uttar Kamalabari Satra, has performed cultural programmes nationwide and abroad.
  • Shamaguri Satra: Renowned for its exquisite mask-making traditions in India.

Overnight stay: Bamboo Hut.

After breakfast, depart for Sivasagar, crossing the Brahmaputra River again by local ferry.

En Route Visit:

  • Dhekiakhowa Bornamghar: One of the most revered religious sites in Jorhat, established by the saint-reformer Madhavdeva, a disciple of Srimanta Shankardeva. Its origin is associated with a humble meal of rice and Dhekia Saak (a local leafy vegetable) offered by a poor, elderly woman, which impressed Madhavdeva so much that he decided to set up a Namghar (Prayer House) at the site.

Arrive at Sivasagar and check in at the hotel.

Sivasagar:
Located 369 km east of Guwahati, Sivasagar (formerly Rangpur) is rich in historical relics, bearing testimony to the 600 years of Ahom rule.

Places to Visit:

  • Rang Ghar: A two-storeyed structure built by the 34th Ahom king, Pramatta Singha in 1746, which served as the royal sports pavilion for various entertainments like wrestling, bird fighting, and buffalo fighting.
  • Tolatol Ghar: Originally constructed by King Rudra Singha in 1699 and later rebuilt by King Rajeswar Singha (1751–1769), this seven-storey palace (four above ground, three underground) served as the military station and capital of the Ahom kings.
  • Shiva Dole: Built by Queen Ambika, the second queen of Shiva Singha, in 1734. It is reputed to be the tallest Shiva Temple in Northeast India, with a height of 180 feet and a diameter of 195 feet, capped by a seven-foot-high golden dome.
  • Sivasagar Tank (Barpukhuri): Also constructed by Queen Ambika in 1734, this tank covers an area of 129 acres. Its water level remains consistently above that of the town.
  • Kareng Ghar (The Gargaon Palace): The original structure was made of wood and stone. The present surviving brick palace was rebuilt by King Rajeshwar Singha in 1752, with an enclosing brick wall constructed by King Pramatta Singha in 1747.
  • Charaideo Maidam: Often compared to the pyramids of Egypt, this site contains the tombs of Ahom kings and queens. Charaideo was the first capital of the Ahom kingdom, established by King Sui-Ka-Pha. It also serves as the sacred burial ground of the Ahom dynasty.

Overnight stay: Hotel in Sivasagar.

After breakfast, depart for Jorhat or Dibrugarh Airport.
The tour ends with sweet memories.
